COOKIE BANNER

2024

MADE USING

Figma, UserCentrics, Usertesting.com

The final cookie banner design was originally designed in Figma, and later imported into usercentrics, our cookie provider. Because usercentrics had some things that were unavailable in the original design, some changes were made from the preferred variant / design from the usability test.

USABILITY TEST

GOALS

  • Evaluate user satisfaction and how easy the cookie banner is to use

  • Evaluate the user's understanding of cookies based on the text

  • Evaluate what users will click (accept, reject, customize) based on the format and text of the cookie banner

  • Evaluate the preselected options in the different variations to see if they make an impact

  • Identify any issues or areas of improvement

METHODOLOGY

The method we chose to use to test our cookie banner versions were 2 A-B tests, where the most opposite versions of our banners were put up against each other for users to rate and give their opinions on.

  • Where: Usertesting.com

    • Users will be chosen though usertesting.com

    • Diverse group of participants; ages 18-45 who are familiar with websites

  • Number of participants: 61 users (30 participants per test)

    • Participants will be English speaking and from different countries.

  • Duration: ~5 – 13 minutes per test

VARIATIONS

RESULTS

THE PREFERRED COOKIE BANNER: VERSION D
USER RATINGS BY VARIANT
COOKIE ACCEPTANCE
CHANGES WHEN USERS READ COOKIE DESCRIPTIONS

The preferred version of the cookie banner design is Version D, consisting of a professional writing style with toggles in an expanded modal.

Many users do not read the cookies, and instead will usually click “allow only necessary”. However, in situations where the cookie descriptions are presented to them or when they are asked to read, they will analyze the options and choose from those that are shown to them. This led to an overall increase in the cookies that are chosen, such as an increase in users clicking preferences and statistics specifically.

Version D had the greatest number of users change their opinion on what cookies they would allow. When presented all cookie options, including the descriptions, many users thought this led to more transparency of the website overall, increasing their willingness to allow cookies.
